Btw…for the month of June

It’s summertime, summertime, sum sum summertime, summertime ime..ime..ime

Hello neighbors, I thought I would start off with a little song to get those feet moving.  I have some important information to pass along in this edition as well as some reminders from previous months that I think are worth repeating.  Of course, I will finish off with my Fun Facts and calendar events.  So, I better get busy.

Message from the HOA Board President – Kris McDougall

FACEBOOK – The Oaks HOA Board does not have an official Facebook group page.  Additionally, not every Board member owns a Facebook profile.  There are no guarantees that a sitting member of the Board will see a complaint or concern posted on a Facebook page.  Please direct all inquiries to The Oaks office, (859) 272-2113, Assurance (859) 296-4663 or any Board member.

RECYCLING – Please take advantage of recycling.  Our trash containers get very full, especially the Eaton trash closets where 24 units share eight containers.  The Oaks has a large, blue, recycling dumpster located at north end of the Hill Gail.

Items for recycling:  #1 and #2 plastic bottles, jugs and jars, glass bottles & jars, steel & aluminum cans, canisters and lids, dry cardboard & paperboard (break down all boxes to allow more space).  Paper, food, and beverage cartons.

MATERIALS SHOULD BE CLEAN, DRY AND LOOSE.  NEVER BAG RECYCLABLES.

*** America is home to 5% of the world’s population, yet it consumes three times as much natural resource as the global average. This means that every year we fill enough garbage trucks in the United States to form a line that would stretch from the Earth, halfway to the moon; that’s 119,430 miles! ***

Social Committee News:

  • The July 4th celebration has been decided. Here are the specifics:
  • The date is July 2nd – 4:30- until in the Clubhouse.
  • $5.00 at the door
  • Sonny’s Bar-B-Que sandwiches will be provided as well as water, lemonade and iced tea.
  • Side dishes are certainly welcome if you can.

There will be good food, music and hopefully good weather.

  • Workshops are coming…The Social Committee has invited our very own World-renown Genealogist, Ann Todd, to hold a 2-hour workshop on the topic she excels in and has taught in classrooms in the past. The title of the workshop is “Who Are You Really?” and will be held on Sunday, August 6th, 2023, from 2:00-4:00 pm in the Clubhouse.  It is free of charge to all Co-owners and residents.  However, donations to the Social Committee are always welcome.

Ann will share her knowledge on teaching you how to walk through the why and how to do your own genealogy searching to see exactly who and where you came from. You are welcome to bring your laptop to the class.

Please sign up in the Clubhouse if you plan on attending so she will have an idea of how many copies of her materials she will need to have on hand the day of the workshop.

  • If there are other Workshop topics you would like to have the Social Committee work on providing, please let me know. You can email me at [email protected] and tell me the topic as well as what in that topic are you interested in hearing or learning about.  If it is something we can find an instructor for FREE OF CHARGE, we will be happy to accommodate.

The Book Club – The Orphan Collector is the book being read now and will be discussed on Monday, June 19th, at 1:00 p.m. in the Clubhouse.

The next book is called The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.  It is the perfect beach read about a reclusive Hollywood starlet.  Evelyn Hugo tells about her glamorous and scandalous life as she reflects on her relentless rise to the top.

At the June 19th meeting the August book selection will be revealed.  Stop by the Clubhouse, even if you haven’t read the book or are not a reader at all and join in the discussions and make new friends.  We would love to meet you.

FUN FACTS

Rupp arena concert

Sher, er, er, er, er ry Ba ya be – Sound familiar?  On August 27th at 7:00 p.m. I have tickets to go see Frankie Valli at Rupp Arena.  Get your tickets now and join me.  For all you “Sherry’s, Cheri’s, Sheri’s” out there you can finally have that song sang to you personally by its originator.  I can’t wait!

Picnic at the Pops is back

  • On Saturday, August 12th, at Keeneland Meadow will be “An Evening of Symphonic Disco with Boogie Wonder Band.” They are a 10-piece band playing disco-strutting jams straight out of the ‘70s.  As always, they will be backed by The Lexington Philharmonic.
  • Whether you have your food brought from home, catered, or purchased from one of the local food trucks that will be situated on the event property, the food has always been the central part of the event. As in the past there will be contests to enter.  One is the Table Decorating Contest and the other is the Themed Cocktail Contest.
  • Plan now to attend this wonderful event that started in 1980 and continues. Table reservations begin on June 23rd for those that have never attended before.  General admission/blanket seating will go on sale in July.
  • For more information email: [email protected] or call 859-233-3535 (M-F 10:00 am – 4:00 pm)

How about those Kentucky Baseball Wildcats??????

They headed to the Super Regionals for just the second time in school history.  By the time you get this newsletter they will already be home.  But what a fantastic season they had. This is something to truly cheer about and be proud of.  I read that on the wall in the new UK baseball stadium there is a sign that says, “The Road to Omaha goes through Kentucky.”  What a positive statement to set the tone for every game.  Way to go Coach!

In reading the article about the game they won to advance to the Super Regionals, there were two names mentioned that had solid outings during that game, Darren Williams and Mason Moore.  Now, this is a proud momma talking but my son coached Mason Moore when he was 15 and 16 years old.  He called Coach Mingione because they are friends and told him he had a kid that was pretty special on the mound.  That was Mason Moore.  Mason had multiple schools salivating for him, but my son was instrumental in helping Mason make the roster at UK.  Yes, I’m smiling!

UK Men’s Tennis ended their season at the National Quarterfinals.  Two of their players were named 2023 All-Americans in singles.

Former UK quarterback, Tim Couch has been named to the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame Ballot.  Good luck, Tim.  You truly are deserving.

REMINDERS

  • Please, please remember to NEVER bring glass bottles of any kind into the pool deck area. If glass is broken on the deck or near the water or in the water, the entire pool will have to be drained and it could cost well into the thousands which will be charged to the owner of the glass.
  • Please remember to bring your key fob to the pool when you come. It is not OK for other residents to use their fob to let you in when you have “forgotten to bring yours with you”.  This is happening a lot this summer so for security reasons don’t do it because you could be letting someone in that doesn’t live here.
  • To avoid falls in the Clubhouse from the pool area, please make sure to wear some type of shoes and dry off well before entering the back of the Clubhouse to use either the facilities or the kitchen. The floors can be rather slick when wet which could cause someone to fall and if no one is with them or in the Clubhouse at the time, it may cause a delay in providing assistance if needed.  Please no bathing suits in seating areas of the Clubhouse.
  • Trash Container Buildings – This is for the Eaton trash buildings. There is a Herbie provided for each unit in every building.  These are there for bags of trash only.

Did you know that if you are throwing away an overabundance of items other than bags full of trash, those need to be discarded either in the blue recycling bin as described above or make arrangements with Assurance to meet someone at the gated trash area located past the tennis courts where motor homes, boats and other cars are stored.  Items other than trash bags are not to be left on the floor area or put in the Herbies, which causes them to be too full and will not hold trash bags.  If you have concerns about what you are throwing away, reach out to Assurance for direction on where and when this can take place.

Neighbors, I leave you this month by telling you the Board is working very diligently with our management company to continue getting things repaired here at The Oaks.  The Board is aware of the many repairs needed on our property.  We continue to have discussions and use our best judgement in making decisions.

This month’s Oaks Board meeting is on Tuesday, June 20th, at 6:30 p.m., in the Clubhouse. If you are not able to attend, please get on the Zoom link that Ann Wesley will send out ahead of time, so you don’t miss out on any information about where you live.

I will be leaving on vacation July 2nd headed to Ocala, Florida to spend some much-needed mother/son time.  But never fear, I will still have a July Btw…Newsletter written while I am there.  I will also attend the monthly Work Session and Board meeting via Zoom or by phone, if possible.

See you at the June 20th Board meeting.
